Editorial Team

The Editorial Board of Sortuz is composed of scholars with recognized academic excellence and expertise in socio-legal studies, as well as a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary and international research. In line with the journal’s mission, special attention is given to ensuring career stage inclusiveness, and the board will strive to include scholars at various stages of their academic trajectory, particularly early-career researchers.

The Editor-in-Chief is the Scientific Director of the International Institute for the Sociology of Law (IISL), serving a two-year term. Members of the Editorial Board are appointed either by the Editor-in-Chief or by the Governing Board of the IISL, in consultation with the Executive Editorial Team and, where appropriate, with input from the existing Editorial Board.

Appointments are for an indefinite period, subject to periodic review. Continued membership depends on active engagement with the journal’s editorial work, including being generally available to review a reasonable number of submissions annually, contributing to the journal’s scholarly mission, and upholding its values of academic rigor, inclusiveness, diversity, and global visibility. Members may resign at any time by informing the Executive Editorial Team. The journal may also adjust board composition as needed to ensure ongoing vitality and relevance.

Executive Editorial Team

The Executive Editorial Team consists of the Journal Manager and a socio-legal scholar with a demonstrated connection to the IISL. Together, this team is responsible for implementing journal policies and making key decisions for the functioning of the journal, in coordination with the Editor-in-Chief.

The Assistant Editorial Team is composed of emerging socio-legal scholars, selected based on either demonstrated academic merit, or a proven connection with the IISL (e.g., participation in the Oñati Master’s Programme, workshops, or academic collaborations).

Assistant Editors are proposed by the Executive Editorial Team and must be approved by the Editor-in-Chief or by the IISL’s Governing Board. Their primary role is to screen incoming submissions, ensuring that manuscripts fall within the scope and aims of the journal, and meet basic scholarly and formatting standards before proceeding to peer review. In this way, they play a vital function in upholding the quality and relevance of the journal’s content, while gaining valuable experience in academic publishing.
