This article provides a friendly critique (Moosavi 2019) of Southern criminology, arguing that this movement will be an exclusionary project if it remains committed to the idea of place. Examining the overlooking of “Eastern” and “South-Eastern Europe” in Southern criminology, I argue that this might be due to place-based synecdochic thinking: using selective parts to represent that whole. My contention is that engaging in synecdochic thinking has produced representations in Southern criminology that are selective and exclusionary in practice. Through discussing Russia’s re-imperialization war on Ukraine as well as examining the historical case of slavery from Eastern and Southeastern parts of “Europe,” I demonstrate the complex, fluid, and blurring “nature” of oppression that complicate southern-centred, decolonial analyses in this locality. The paper calls for the rejection of synecdochic thinking in favor of more complex understandings of epistemic injustice and how it is produced.
