Esta investigación tiene por objeto estudiar el control formal del espacio urbano en Santiago de Chile desde una aproximación socio-legal con orientación normativa (Lacey 1996). El artículo presenta hallazgos significativos de un trabajo de campo realizado en el centro de Santiago en los años 2023-2024. Se observó que, junto con las policías nacionales, el espacio público es gobernado por inspectores municipales y por la desconocida figura de los “agentes de copamiento”, quienes sin contar con atribuciones legales utilizan estrategias de control del orden denominadas “copamiento” y “desplazamiento”. Este artículo interroga la legalidad y la relación del Estado con estos fenómenos. Se concluye que el control territorial que realizan estos agentes representa una extensión del Estado policial caracterizado por un alto grado de informalidad y opacidad, y lo que aquí denomino “alegalidad”, que pone en entredicho principios fundamentales del Estado de derecho y evidencia desprecio hacia determinados grupos sociales.
