The papers collected in this issue offer different points of view on the opportunities and the challenges faced by the institutions of direct participatory democracy in contemporary constitutional states. Never questioning the legitimacy of representative governments, we start out from a dynamic conception of democracy, which sees the citizen’s direct participation in public matters as a means of increasing democracy.
