Susanne Karstedt, Griffith University

Susanne Karstedt is Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Leeds, School of Law, Centre for Criminal Justice Studies. She is an editor of the British Journal of Criminology and of two book series, in Germany and the UK. She is the recipient of the Christa Hoffmann Riehm Award for Socio-Legal Studies, 2005, of the Award of Recognition for Outstanding Services to the International Society of Criminology, Stockholm, 2006, and of the Thorsten Sellin and Eleanor and Sheldon Glueck Award of the American Society of Criminology, 2007.

Her research and publications focus on cross-cultural and cross national studies of crime and justice. Her themes for comparative research are violence; crimes of the respectable middle classes (comparison between Germany and Britain); corruption and crimes of the powerful; imprisonment and prison conditions. She is presently publishing a book on a comparative study of democracy, crime and justice. Her present research focuses on state crime, genocide, and mass atrocities in extremely violent societies. She has researched and written extensively on transitional justice, in particular on the Nuremberg trials and justice and impunity in Germany after 1945.
