The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) has been in operation for 20 years. Since then, it has continued to grow in importance and has seen its budget and functions increase. All this with the aim of being the body responsible for coordinating the control and surveillance of the external borders of the European Union and Schengen. It also plays an important role in outsourcing and imposing the EU's border agenda on third countries. In this way, it has become one of the most important agencies in the EU, although not without controversy related to scandals involving human rights violations. This article reviews and analyzes the evolution over the past 20 years of one of the most important, powerful, and relevant agencies in the European Union.
