Introduction
Institutionalization, irruption and embeddedness in democratic innovations

This article maps the deployment of institutional democratic innovations and diverse expressions of irruptive forms of participation in order to improve democracy ‘with’ or ‘in front of’ the institution. In dialogue with the most recent and cutting-edge reflections in the academia, the text highlights three key elements that articulate this monograph. Firstly, the need to move beyond the mere institutionalization of participation in order to ensure that democratic logic embeds in political, social and institutional culture. Secondly, the importance of protest and irruption as an element of democratization. Thirdly, the need to broaden the analysis of democracy to include the study of instituting spaces that are outside the institution.
