Migration and torture: The violent structuration of securitarian border
DOI:
https://doi.org/10.35295/osls.iisl.2493Keywords:
borderlands, violence, security, torture, migration, crimes against humanityAbstract
The increasing imposition of a securitarian logics in the management of migrant mobility has had obvious consequences for the conditions under which migratory transit takes place. The need to cross hostile geographies, police pressure, expulsions without any legal guarantees, and the criminalization of solidarity create a violent scenario that captures migrants, making their existence precarious. We are thus witnessing a border biopolitics deeply connected to violent logics that produce daily exposure to death. This article begins with this context to reflect on how some of these violent practices should be named. In this sense, it raises the appropriateness of using in some circumstances the image of torture and, in parallel, crimes against humanity. This opens up a reflection that necessarily requires connecting conceptual, political, and legal dimensions.
