Law and political economy, Latin America, legal infrastructure, capitalism, Global SouthAbstract
This special issue examines the relationship between law and political economy in Latin America, foregrounding historically situated and context-sensitive approaches to the study of legal-economic orders. The contributions draw on diverse empirical fields—including constitutional law, labour law, corporate responsibility, social policy, environmental and extractive regulation, and digital governance—to analyze how legal arrangements shape economic conflict, governance, and distribution in contexts marked by unequal development and institutional heterogeneity. Rather than advancing a unified theoretical framework, the issue brings into dialogue multiple trajectories, problematics, and analytical perspectives within law and political economy, emphasizing the historical and institutional conditions through which legal-economic relations are constituted and contested. Taken together, the contributions highlight the analytical value of situated and historically grounded approaches for understanding law and political economy in the Global South.
