Oñati Socio-Legal Series receives a JIF for the first time and improves its metrics in the Web of Science

Clarivate has released the Journal Citation Reports on 28 June. This year for the first time, more than 9,000 quality journals from more than 3,000 publishers, including Oñati Socio-legal Series, have received a Journal Impact Factor for the first time. Oñati Socio-Legal Series has been constantly improving its performance on Clarivate's Web of Science database. It has received a JIF of 0.5. Moreover, it has moved up to the Q2 quartile according to the Journal Citation Indicator (JCI), ranking 177 of 411 Law journals.

Beginning with the 2022 metrics, released in June 2023, all journals in the Web of Science Core Collection receive a JIF. This extends to the Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) and Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) for the first time. Oñati Socio-Legal Series is in the ESCI. In the JCR that has just been published, Oñati Socio-Legal Series has received a JIF of 0.5. It had a total of 133 citable items from years 2020 and 2021, and it received a total of 64 citations in 2022 to those 133 items.

OSLS and all 9,000 journals indexed in AHCI and ESCI have not received a rank, quartile or percentile. These values will be calculated with the release of the 2023 metrics in June 2024.

Q2 in Law journals

In 2021, Clarivate introduced the Journal Citation Indicator (JCI). According to this metric, Oñati Socio-Legal Series is now in the Q2 quartile of Law journals, ranking 177th of all 411 titles, moving up one quartile. The JCI percentile is at an all-time high of 57.06.

The JCI was introduced in 2021 with the release of the 2020 metrics and was calculated back to 2017. It represents the average category-normalized citation impact for papers published in the prior three-year period.

OSLS and Sortuz have published their own style guidelines

OSLS and Sortuz have now their own official house style guidelines compendium, published and available to anyone on each of the journal websites and on the step-by-step submission panel. These guidelines have been developed drawing on the internationally well-known Harvard and APA guidelines, but they also acknowledge the nuance and particular usage of them that contributing authors of both OSLS and Sortuz have made throughout the years.

This compendium of the Oñati guidelines does not aim to be exhaustive. Its goal is to offer an overview of our house style as it has developed organically and as it is understood and owned by both OSLS and Sortuz as a part of their editorial policy and process. It is based on the British Standards BS 5605:1990 Recommendations for citing and referencing published material and BS 1629:1989 Recommendations or references to published materials, and also, partially, on the APA Style Guidelines. All of these have been adapted to reflect the current usage in both OSLS and Sortuz.

Authors are advised to present their submissions using this citing and referencing style. When in doubt or for something not covered in this style sheet , they can always default back on the commonly used Harvard guidelines, because accepted submissions go through a personalized editorial revision and correction of citations and references, as well as other formal aspects.

As a by-product of the Harvard style, the core of the Oñati style is to cite publications in the text by giving the author’s surname and the year of publication, and to list all the citations in a bibliography (“references”) at the end of the text. This is why it can be referred to as “author - date style”.

OSLS will have a Journal Impact Factor (JIF)

Clarivate has announced that all Web of Science Core Collection journals will have Journal Impact Factors from 2023 on. This is excellent news for Oñati Socio-Legal Series, which is included in the Core Collection. The announcement was made 26 July.

The change will affect the 2023 release of the Journal Citation Reports. This change means expanding the JIF from Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) to include journals from the Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) and the multidisciplinary Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), the latter which includes OSLS.

In addition, the 2023 release of the Journal Citation Reports will display the JIF with one decimal place, rather than the current three decimal places, to encourage users to consider the other indicators and descriptive data in the JCR when comparing journals.

Oñati Socio-Legal Series is in the Q3 of JCR Law journals

Clarivate has launched the June JCR Report, which features Oñati Socio-Legal Series for the first year, and in the 3rd quartile (Q3) of Law journals. It ranks 246th of 403 journals.

For the first time, JCR covers the full breadth of research covered in all the journals in the Web of Science Core Collection, including the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), which has not been fully covered in JCR until now.

As Clarivate's Dr Nandita Quaderi states, "the journals covered in AHCI and ESCI have met the same rigorous quality criteria (...) for coverage as the publications covered in the Science Citation Index and the Social Sciences Citation Index. Therefore, AHCI and ESCI – and their content from trustworthy, Web of Science-selected journals – merit complete coverage in the JCR" [Source].

ESCI journals, as is OSLS's case, do not receive a Journal Impact Factor (JIF).

OSLS's JCI (Journal Citation Indicator) is 0.42. This is the average Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI) of citable items published by a journal over a recent three-year period. The average JCI in a category is 1.

The report certifies OSLS as a Diamond Open Access journal, with all its citable contents being published in open access. The citable items constitute 91% of OSLS's output.

First Online publication: All OSLS articles on one site

Oñati Socio-Legal Series — 2021-05-21

OSLS First Online articles - articles that have been reviewed, accepted, revised, and copy-edited with the style and visual elements that are trademarks of OSLS, and that are made public ahead of their assignment to a particular OSLS issue - are now available on the same journal site. They will be compiled on a website page: https://opo.iisj.net/index.php/osls/firstonline

This page can be accessed through the navigation menu on the top left bar of the website.

This integration of all OSLS publications on one site makes it easier to identify the First Online papers as official publications of OSLS, and it provides a more seamless navigation across different parts of the journal, such as current issue, archives, journal policy, etc.

The First Online section will be updated on a regular basis as new articles go through the production process and are ready to be published.

A new-and-improved publishing platform for our journals

OSLS has participated in an international survey about Diamond Open Access

Diamond Open Access is the designation applied to journals that have neither subscription fees nor Article Processing Charges and are, therefore, free to read and to publish in.

Oñati Socio-legal Series is now included in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (Web of Science)

Beginning with issue 7(1) and onwards, our journal will be indexed and abstracted in the ESCI. The ESCI is part of the Web of Science Core Collection, and it was launched in 2015 to include high-quality, peer reviewed publications. It ensures important research is visible in the Web of Science Core Collection.

As of 2018, the Core Collection included more than 12,700 top-tier international and regional journals in over 250 disciplines. The Web of Science Core Collection is, nowadays, unarguably one of the top indexing tools for scientific journals and books, as well as a seal of quality by itself. Journals that are part of ESCI are carefully evaluated by independent experts. Citations from the ESCI are included in the citation counts for Journal Citation Reports, so they contribute to the Impact Factors of other journals.

As part of the ESCI, OSLS is now discoverable on Web of Science with full citation counts, author information and other enrichment. These articles will be included in an author's h-index calculation, and they will also be in analysis conducted on other Clarivate products such as InCites.

Being in the ESCI will improve OSLS's visibility and provides a mark of quality, with the benefits that this brings to authors. As part of the ESCI, Oñati Socio-legal Series will be eligible for inclusion in the SSCI (Social Sciences Citation Index).

Having been selected for indexation in the ESCI is a great accomplishment for the Institute, and we wish to thank all of the authors, guest editors, and reviewers who have helped us fulfill this goal.

Papers will now have a DOI number

Oñati Socio-Legal Series — 2019-05-08

Most notoriously, our journal, Oñati Socio-legal Series, will now assign a complete DOI (Digital Object Identifier) to each of its articles.

The DOI prefix assigned to the institute is 10.35295, and all OSLS articles will have a link beginning with this prefix, the suffix "osls.iisl", and a 16-digit number. Articles published this year already have a DOI, and we are working on registering a DOI for older articles.

DOI enables every published article to cite properly, thus provides accurate number of citations and also increase the visibility of the published work. This increases the impact factor of the author and journal as well.

New site for first publication of accepted papers

The IISL is proud to announce that ANVUR, Italy's National Evaluation Agency for University and Research, has acknowledged the scientific level of Oñati Socio-legal Series and placed it in the category of upper class journals (Class 'A' journals) in both the legal-philosophical and sociological sectors. This is an important achievement, which has been the result of the hard work of Luigi Cominelli, Vincenzo Ferrari and Cristina Ruiz, among others.
