The Oñati International Institute for the Sociology of Law has been in existence since 1988, and has established a world-wide reputation as a pre-eminent centre for law and society studies. It was founded jointly by the Research Committee for the Sociology of Law of the International Sociological Association and the Basque Government (Ministry of Justice), which provides its main funds, each nominate half the members of its Governing Board. The IISL is a unique institution, which is firmly rooted in the Basque country, Spain and the EU, as well as playing a central role in worldwide studies and research in law and society. The IISL has three main areas of activity:

  1. its International Master´s in the Sociology of Law;
  2. its programme of over a dozen workshops and conferences each year, chosen on the basis of a competition, involving prominent researchers from all over the world in intensive discussions and interactions;
  3. the welcome it provides for doctoral, post-doctoral and senior researchers to visit and use its excellent facilities for research and writing, particularly its Library and Documentation Centre. These activities are supervised by a Scientific Director selected for a 2-year term, with an Administrative Director and ten administrative staff members.
